SUNDAY PROCESSIONS.......

People from over the world, and the country descend on Antigua on Sundays just to see the processions from the different churches. The procession usually starts around 11.00am and passes though the all the streets till late in the evening. People following the sound of the band as it makes its way back to the church. During the day the town is filled with men in purple robes to take their turn in carrying the figure of Christ, while the women dressed in black and white prepare to carry the Virgin Mary.

Included in the procession are roman soldiers and a big band playing very sombre and serious music. Selected men and boys walk through the streets with incense, and the streets are filled with smoke and a very strong smell of incense which lingers the whole day. Following right behind all this is a team of cleaners and a bulldozer, ready to start the clean up. The next morning the streets are clean and no one would believe the activity of the previous day. I have never seen anything like it and its only a small lead up to the major ones on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Otherwise known as Semana Santa!!!I can’t wait!

TAKE A LOOK AT THESE!!!!!!!.....

Hi N! It looks absolutely awesome! I can imagine the noise , the incense, the colours and the imagery, the crowds, turn this into an outer body experience! (The little one I saw a month ago almost did that!) Then the sight of a Roam Legion heading into the main square ... the mind boggles.. Good Friday will be phenomenal ! Enjoy! Bob H
